it starts with an idea.
find something that fits, like an unwanted 50's husqvarna. and draw up some plans..

so, the process continues. cleaning up of the fork crown for accurate measurement and disassembly.

it's too narrow for the fatter tyres i eventually want to use (622 x 1.75/2.0) so the crown will need to be rebuilt (pink sections in the first drawing). i plan to use the original forks and head tube. i'll have a new wider and heavier (3mm instead of 2.5mm) set of plates water cut for the crown and attempt to braze it all back together straight and true. width will go from 83mm to 110mm. at least that's the plan. unfortunately it does involve cutting up the old fork crown..

frame fitting.

benke printed out a full size drawing for me on his plotter at work. fantastic, as it means i can check the fit of all parts as i go along, in particular the frame dimensions. got a fair bit of cutting and bending left to do..

First bit of tube bending done last night with much help from Benke.

Decided to make a jig directly on a table surface. Leveled the table first, then marked out frame placement. Two straight pieces of wood and one cut to the desired curve were screwed to the work surface.

Filled the tube with dry sand and plugged the open end with cork and heavy silver tape. The head tube has a small internal opening at the down tube junction so i rolled some rubber mat for a tight fit.

Frame was held in a vice and oxy acetylene heated, then quickly transferred to the jig and pulled by hand. To ensure a smooth, clean bend we did this in two smaller stages rather then try to do the whole bend in one go. Initially i wanted a 10° bend but decided on 12° for a steeper down tube angle.

a quick update – new drawing with motor mount, motor and possible exhaust.
and what's that – a mudguard (aka 'fender' for those of a more westerly persuasion) on the rear? wow.

But I'm not sure of the mudguard...?
